Turning Surplus Into Hope: How One Doctor’s Vision Is Changing Lives Around the World

When hospitals upgrade their medical equipment, most of what’s replaced still has years of life left. Perfectly functional beds, monitors, and tools are often discarded — simply because newer models have arrived. For Dr. Pedro Cordero, that never sat right.

In 2007, after serving on a medical mission to the Philippines, Dr. Cordero saw firsthand how something as simple as a hospital bed could restore dignity to a patient. That experience inspired him to found Mano a Mano Relief, a nonprofit dedicated to repurposing surplus medical and educational supplies from U.S. hospitals and sending them to communities in need across the world.

Today, Mano a Mano Relief works hand in hand with hospitals, clinics, and volunteers to collect, refurbish, and ship equipment to underserved regions throughout Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Each shipment represents more than just supplies — it’s a message of compassion, connection, and solidarity.

In places where patients are often treated on the floor or where clinics lack basic equipment, a single hospital bed can make an enormous difference. It offers comfort, safety, and humanity — and it reminds families that they are not forgotten.

Mano a Mano Relief’s work doesn’t stop with equipment. Under Dr. Cordero’s leadership, the organization continues to send medical teams abroad, providing free care, vaccinations, and training for local healthcare providers. These missions create lasting change — building capacity, knowledge, and hope in the communities they serve.

If you’ve ever wondered how one act of giving can change the world, this is it. What others see as surplus, Mano a Mano Relief turns into salvation.
